The second edition of
"Elementary Azerbaijani" by Kurtulush Oztopchu has
just been released this summer. This is the only serious major
grammar textbook currently available for learning Azeri in the
English language. The first edition was published in 2000.
"Elementary Azerbaijani" is a beginning level course
and the first Azerbaijani textbook in Latin script in English.
The book contains conversational language, a graded grammar (simple
to more complex), extensive coverage of the basic grammar, written
exercises and audio drills with each unit.
Although the text uses the official Latin-modified script for
Azeri, it also includes drills in Azeri Cyrillic, as many books
were published in this script during the Soviet period (1920-1991).
The appendices include conjugations and an Azerbaijani-English
/ English-Azerbaijani glossary with approximately 2,400 words
each.
The author, Dr. Kurtulush Oztopchu, taught Azeri in summer sessions
at UCLA from 1993-1997, as part of the John D. Soper Central
Asian Language Institute. He has written several scholarly works
relating to Turkic languages, including an article published
in Azerbaijan International: "A
Comparison of Modern Azeri with Modern Turkish". AI 1:3 (Autumn
1993).
"Elementary Azerbaijani" by Kurtulush Oztopchu. Kitab
Matbaasi: Istanbul, Turkey, 2003. Soft bound, ISBN 975-93773-0-6,
photos and illustrations, 381 pages.
