The Summer School will focus on gender relations in the widest sense, i.e. relations between women and men, between women and women and between men and men. Gender issues (e.g. segregation and differential access in the labor market, family patterns, violence against women, power relations, moving notions of masculinity and femininity and their inscription in cultural norms etc) shall be addressed in a comparative and multi-disciplinary perspective including legal, sociological, historical, philosophical, literary and political science approaches.
The various ways in which such gender relations shape and are shaped by the process of European integration and the building of new forms of European identity are to be examined in the light of the questions related to the Southern and Eastern boundaries of Europe. Important for their own sake, these questions provide at the same time privileged insights not only into the problematic aspects and the potentialities of the ongoing process of the European integration but also into the gender dynamics informing this process. The Southern and Eastern boundaries of Europe shall be explored in both their external and internal dimension in their differential political/institutional and symbolic effects upon the different populations concerned. This perspective implies comparative approaches:
a) Northern and southern parts of the E.U. How do transformations undergone by gender relations across Europe affect the countries of Southern Europe? To what extent, for instance, the relative liberalization of the legislation concerning family and sexuality undermines "traditional" gender hierarchies in the South? To what extent policies of gender equality strengthened women citizenship, autonomy and social rights?
b) European and non European populations within the E.U. What are the implications of the symbolic and institutional internal boundaries of East and South on the mapping of gender within the E.U.? How does the new configuration of the " stranger " and the hierarchies it stems from (non-nationals/non E.U. citizen, legal/illegal, workers/asylum seekers) affect the relations between men and women of the migrant populations, and between EU non EU and non European women? Between European and non-European gay or lesbian couples? What forms of new subjectivities do they engender?
c) Relations between the EU and non-European or non-E.U peoples and populations.
Gender has been a central issue in the (economic, political, cultural) relations of the EU with the peoples and countries beyond its South and Eastern boundaries. It has been and still is the core of culturalist and nationalist stereotypes of Mediterranean cultures - stereotypes contributing to a definition of Europeanness which suppresses the historical and present plurality of religious, cultural and intellectual traditions of Europe (see for instance the "question " of the veil). It is often a crucial dimension of illegal yet growing sector of " informal " economy (sexual tourism, prostitution, domestic service) in Europe.
Gender is also a central issue of the recent re-shaping of the national boundaries in the East : not only in the visible forms of the emergence of new aggressive patterns of masculinity and open violence against women as experienced, for instance, in the recent wars and ethnic purification practices in ex-Yugoslavia, but also in the more invisible and less systematically documented processes of the emergence of new nationalisms and the ethnicisation of politics. The specificities of gender relations in the South and the East shall thus be approached both in their relations to pre-existing cultural patterns and power relations and as (by) products of new economic and geo-political aspects of the process of European integration itself. In adopting this double approach and a multi-disciplinary perspective, we hope to illuminate some "the sore points" of defining new forms of present and future European identity and, therefore, contribute to the development of an understanding of Europe as a pluralist cultural and political space and as an open process of democratic integration.
