On behalf of BISNIS' Central Asian/Cauasus(Azerbaijan) Team (Philip de Leon, Ellen House, Joan Morgan, Derek Nowek, Kelly Raftery, Judith Robinson) and our colleagues at U.S. Dept of Commerce's Multilateral Bank Devt Operations Office.

The Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Annual Meeting is taking place May 7-11, 2001 in the United States for the first time in many years. Annually, the Asian Development Bank offers approximately $6 billion in technical and financial assistance for social, economic, and physical infrastructure projects in its 33 Asian developing member countries.

Especially since the ADB's activities are lesser known to a wider amount of our clients, we would like to draw your attention to important events occurring before and during this important Annual Meeting.

Background
Recently six Central Asian/Caucasus countries (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) became members of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and thus are eligible for ADB public sector and private sector financing. Financing by the ADB to these countries results in excellent opportunities. We have written our BISNIS clients extensively about this previously.

Over the next three years, the ADB intends to finance public sector projects and technical assistance totaling nearly $1.2 billion in a wide variety of sectors to countries in this region.
