Performance Date
Feb 17 - 23, 2001

Featuring
Voice students and orchestra of the Music Academy American Voices artists John Ferguson and Ira Spaulding (baritone and conductor)

From February 17-23rd American Voices will return for its 5th project in Azerbaijan. Bringing the first performances of an American Broadway music to Baku, the project will feature Azerbaijani and American musicians in a concert performance of Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story".

In what promises to be another exciting musical first for Azerbaijani audiences, American Voices will spend 6 intensive days preparing a full-length concert version of the musical featuring 2 dozen of Azerbaijan's most talented singers accompanied by the Orchestra of the Music Academy. The project will culminate in a public performance on February 23rd (time and place to be determined). The project will feature three American artists, each responsible for various aspects of the program: Conductor David Handel (Chicago) will conduct the orchestra, and John Ferguson and Ira Spaulding will prepare the singers. The mix of Azeri talent and American expertise promises to make for a memorable evening.

Another important part of the project will include a donation of American music scores and pedagogical materials as well as computer/Internet equipment to the Music Academy for the creation of a Music Information Center.
