Portrait of the Artist's Mother with a Century Plant

Tahir Salahov's mother Sona was left with five children, ages 14 years to two months, when her husband was arrested by Stalin's agents in 1937. The family did not learn until 18 years later that their father had been executed shortly after he was taken from his home late one evening. Here Tahir shows his mother in contemplation, waiting and waiting, as she sits beside a Century Plant that she herself had planted. The harsh reality of life is reflected in Tahir's works. (Oil on canvas, 110 x 120 cm, 1984).
