Headed for the Kolyma. The most grueling part of a prisoner's journey was often the transfer to the camps. Prisoners suffered from lack of adequate food, water and clothing. Here they made the trip in the back of an open truck at night. The mountain roads were perilous and winter temperatures often dipped far below zero.
