Back to the article

Ornate details from the ceiling near the entrance of what was once the private residence of Oil Baron Murtuza Mukhtarov. This building, which nearly takes up an entire block, is recognized as one of the most ornate in Baku. During the Soviet period, Mukhtarov's property was confiscated and converted to the "Palace of Happiness" (Saadat Sarayi), meaning "Wedding Palace". Photo: Betty Blair.
