European Comission

Anthonius W. De Vries has been appointed Special Envoy of the European Commission to Azerbaijan. The European Commission is charged with representing the European Union in its external relations (except Common Foreign and Security Policy issues). Prior to Baku, he was the Co-coordinator for Economic and Financial Sanctions at the European Commission, responsible for drafting European Community Regulations on sanctions, suppression of financing of terrorism and monitoring the enforcement of relevant Community Law. As Chairman of the Sanctions Management Committee, he also dealt with the EC Blocking Statute against extra-territorial legislation from third countries.

De Vries was the negotiator for the European Community in the Kimberley Process, setting up a Certification Scheme for International Trade in rough diamonds.
