Ambassador Reno Harnish began his responsibilities as U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan in September. He is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service and has extensive experience in energy, economics and conflict resolution.

Harnish previously served as Chief of Mission in Kosovo, Deputy Chief of Mission in Egypt and in Sweden. From 1992 to 1995, he led the U.S. policy on Central Asian politics and scientific cooperation with the New Independent States (NIS) at the U.S. State Department.

He also has served in Italy, Germany, Austria, Saipan (Northern Mariana Islands in the Western Pacific), and Nigeria. In 2001 Mr. Harnish was honored for Presidential Meritorious Service.

Harnish has a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from San Diego State University in California. He has two Masters degrees-one in International Studies from American University, and another in Economics.

Harnish speaks German, Italian, Swedish, some Arabic and some Azeri. He is married to Leslie Harnish and they have two children, Brooke and Reno IV.
