New Faces / New Places
Norwegian Embassy
  Steinar Gil is the new Norwegian Ambassador to Azerbaijan,
replacing Olav Berstad. Gil arrived on January 9, 2002 and presented
his credentials to President Aliyev on March 15, 2002. He has
a Ph.D. in Russian Literature from the University of Oslo and
has lectured on the subject at various universities.
Gil has served at Norway's embassies in Warsaw and Moscow and
headed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Division for CIS and
Central and Eastern Europe. Most recently, he served as Deputy
Director General, heading the Russia/CIS Section. Norwegian Embassy,
