Reza has been on assignment for National Geographic Magazine since 1991, covering Egypt, Turkey, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Russia and China. From 1983 to 1990, he traveled many times to Afghanistan to cover the resistance to the Soviet occupation. In 1990, he worked as a consultant for the United Nations humanitarian program. In 1992, Reza was the only photographer to enter into Kabul with Massoud. He has also worked for Agence Press France, Newsweek and Time magazine, and has received several international photo awards, including the World Press Photo award and the Hope Prize, for his photos of Rwandan refugees. He is also the founder of AINA, a not-for-profit foundation for the promotion of independent media and cultural expression in Afghanistan.
